Electrical Testing
Electrical Installation Condition Report / Periodic Inspection:
This test is designed to check the safety of all hard-wired electrical elements of the property. The Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) suggest that the maximum time between testing periods should be as follows:
- Domestic Installations – 10 years or with a change of occupancy
- Commercial Installations – 5 years or with a change of occupancy
- Industrial Installations – 3 years
- Residential accommodation – 5 years or with a change of occupancy
- Offices, shops & laboratories – 5 years
Minor works certificates:
Willert Electrical can certify any electrical work that has been carried out by yourself or others to ensure that it meets the required safety standards. This is especially important if you are looking to sell or rent your property. We provide minor works certificates for our own work whenever we install anything new.
Emergency lighting testing:
British standards recommends that emergency lights are tested twice a year, including a full 3 hour test and an operational test (typically for 1 hour). These tests are carried out to ensure that the emergency lighting system will be fit-for-purpose during any power outages.
PAT Testing
PAT testing regulations are more complicated than most people think. Appliances are broadly split into Class 1 & Class 2. These are appliances that plug into the mains. Class 1 appliances will have an earth connection, and a Class 2 appliance will not. If there is a square box symbol on the appliance, it tells you it’s Class 2. If there’s no symbol then it’s Class 1. It is recommended that portable appliances are tested based on the following frequencies:
- Offices, shops and hotels – Class 1 equipment (including stationary and IT equipment) should be tested every 48 months. Moveable equipment (such as extension leads and chargers) should be tested every 24 months. Handheld equipment should be tested every 12 months.
- Schools – All Class 1 equipment in schools should be PAT tested every 12 months. Class 2 equipment should be tested every 48 months.
- Public use equipment – Stationary and IT equipment such as computers should be tested every 12 months. Moveable, portable and handheld equipment falling into Class 2 should be tested every 12 months. Moveable, portable and handheld equipment falling into Class 1 should be tested every 6 months.
- Construction – All 110V equipment used on construction sites should be tested every 3 months.
- Industrial – All industrial sites, including commercial kitchens should have portable and handheld equipment tested every 6 months. Stationary, IT and moveable equipment should be tested every 12 months.
